Realema was founded in 2013 by St John’s College and Masibambane College to develop well-trained and qualified teachers, who can return to their communities as passionate educators and leaders.

This teacher intern programme starts its support of prospective interns during their Grade 12 year, and continues after school until the bursary recipients successfully complete a UNISA teaching degree.

The programme runs in five-year cycles that are divided into two parts: the matric year and the four subsequent years of UNISA studies. There are therefore two aspects to the programme:

Matric support (one year)

Realema offers academic, life and study skills support to Masibambane matrics, so that they can achieve the best matric results possible.

Post matric support (four years)

The internship aspect of the programme offers successful candidates full bursaries to study part-time for a professional teaching degree via UNISA, while working full-time as teacher assistants at St John’s College and other Realema Partner Schools. The bursaries include study fees and books, academic tutoring, IT support, all accommodation and living expenses, individual mentoring and workplace guidance and an internship stipend.

Through Realema, financially underprivileged children receive access to tertiary study and an income, with which they are able to help support their families. At the same time, Realema cultivates the professional and passionate teachers that South Africa so desperately needs.
